Won't Stop Living
04:07
|
|||
(1) My doctor tells me I need to cut
back on greasy food
and prescribes me benzodiazepines
to stabilize my mood
well, I skipped my medication now I’m
trembling like a leaf
another plate of french fries
to get me some relief
I’ve been living hard
the story lies behind my scars
I’m well aware
the reaper thrives
I won’t stop living
just to stay alive
(2) My best friend done stopped smoking
he chews gum instead
and even though he’s still breathing
his eyes are fuckin’ dead
now he can talk my ear off
about how proud he is
but I know he craves them cancer sticks
no matter what he says
(repeat refrain)
(3) One day when death snatches me
from this earthly embodiment
he’ll say you know you had it coming boy
your life’s done come and went
I’ll say you may have won this last round
but all you have is time
in the grand scheme of things
victory is mine
(repeat refrain)
(bridge/4) Now, before I sing this last last verse
the disclaimer within implores
this song is made entirely
of fictitious metaphors
any resemblance to real
persons live or dead
is pure coincidence
so don’t be mislead
my wife tells me the roads are bad
the snow is falling hard
but I got me a hockey game
and I’m on the line that starts
so I pack my gear and I think i’ve left
my troubles far behind
but her look of disapproval is
is burned into my mind

(A6) I spent the morning in (D6) the future again
i (A6) gotta bend the rules (G6/B) now and then
but the (Bm7) lords of time are (F#m) watching me
and (D6) tomorrow’s not where i’m (A6) meant to be
so (A) I make the time to (Em) get my way
i re- (G) live the best moments of (D) every day
i (A) know the end is near and i’ll (G) be there soon
i’ve (Bm7) got a five oclock (A) shadow at noon
the (A6) judge looked at me, you (D6) forgot to shave
who’da (A6) thought that stumble would (G6/B) lead me to my grave
but i’m (Bm7) not through yet, cause a (F#m) future me
will (D6) be here any second to (A6) spring me free
oh (A6) i can see the future and the (D6) future sees me
but what (A6) the future doesn’t know is i (G6/B) broke the key
so i’m (Bm7) one step ahead and a (F#m) thousand years behind
and i’ll (D6) reset the clock when i (A6) run out of time
|
||||
3. |
||||
(Em) I’ve got no quarrels, I’m just here to bide my time
but you’re (G) trying to tell me your god is better than mine
I (Em) try to hold my tongue I’ve got nothing to say
a (C) whole lot of nothing but I say it anyway
and a (D) thousand ears turn to me
my (Am) mouth opens I cannot speak
I (C) look upon my bloody hands
I (Em) raise my sword, they understand
(Em) Charge into (Bm7) battle
I’m (D) armed with the (Em) word
I’m (G) off to join the (C) countless ranks of
the (Am) holy and ab-(Em) surd
(Em) Blood guts and glory is the nature of my crime
but you’re (G) trying to tell me your guns are bigger than mine
so (Em) now I call your bluff I won’t budge from where I stand
it’s (C) your turn to show me what you’re holding in your hand
I (D) know you’ll be the first to draw
I’ve (Am) analyzed your fatal flaw
(C) as your eyes are fixed on me
you’re sur- (Em) rounded by my infantry
(Em) Seven years I loved you; I stood by you through wars
(G) now you’re here to tell me my loves not worthy of yours
your (Em) eyes pierce through me to see the broken man inside
but (C) comfort in my sorrow will be solidly denied
cause there’s (D) someone new where you once stood
she (Am) gives me what you never could
I (C) thank you for your cold goodbyes
as (Em) I make sure it’s you who cries

Work The Groove
03:50
|
|||
(E) I feel the need to (A) hum
to- (E) day i have a groove to (A) strum
(hook) the (E) groove the groove (A) something to prove
I work the (E) groove, the groove, (A) make my body move
(Verse 1) oh (E) I’ve been singing for (A) 40 years
ain’t (B7) nobody listnin’ to (E) the falling tears
I’ve been searching for (A) volunteers
to work the (E) groove
(Verse 2) oh (E) i’ve been singing at the (A) top of my lungs
I (B7) left my dreams where my (E) hat is hung
you / think it’s over by I’ve (A) just begun
to work the (E) groove
(Verse 3) oh (E) I’ve been singing in the (A) pouring rain
my (B7) cries on the level but my (E) laugh’s insane
I’ve got to get this (A) scrambled brain
to work the (E) grove
(refrain)
(E) Sometimes I’m happy
(A) Sometimes I’m sad
(B7) Sometimes I just long for
(E) What I’ve never had
(Bridge 1)
and (G#m) when my voice starts to fade
I (C#m7) calculate the price I paid
and I (F#m) question my validity
and (E) what the groove means to me
(Bridge 2) every (G#m) now and then I take the time
I (C#m7) read the script I speak the lines
I com- (F#m) mit the words to memory
I (E) work the groove for all to see
(Bridge 3) and (G#m) every groove I’ve ever known
has (C#m7) worked my fingers to the bone
the (F#m) words in blood the contract’s signed
the (E) reaper’s never far behind
(out)
Oh (E) I’ve been singing in the (A) face of death
oh (B7) I’ll work the groove with my (E) dying breath

Pure And Raw
02:50
|
|||
There’s (C7) stars in my eyes
and a (G7) whimper in my soul
a (C7) pain like no other
(G7) makes me lose control
there’s an (C7) emptiness in emptiness
the (G7) void is unfulfilled
one (C7) look from my thirsty eyes
e- (G7) motion’s been distilled
it’s (Bm) pure and it’s (F#m) raw
and i’m (A) standing here in (D) aw
eyes (C/G) open wide search (Bm) deep inside
where (D) dormant mem-ries (G) crawl
(C7) once I made a promise
that i’d (G7) never feel again
but it (C7) made me kind of sad
when that (G7) nothingness crept in
as that (C7) sadness overwhelmed me
I (G7) still refused to cry
but (C7) now I know I must let go
or (G7) tears will multiply
when (C7) i was young a sunset was
(G7) nothing but an end
to (C7) day I watch the sunset
and i (G7) finally comprehend
there’s (C7) more to life than living
there’s (G7) beauty to be found
in (C7) every moment and every breath
in (G7) every sight and every sound

I See How This Will End
02:45
|
|||
(verse 1)
(G) Well there's / four guys and three girls and I'm (C) one of the guys
well I (D) ain't no mathematician but I (C) know how this di- (G) vides
there is always a remainder when my (C) angle isn't right
I will (D) sip my drink alone for the re- (C) mainder of the (G) night
(refrain)
(G) I can see the future
(Em) I can watch it bend
(C) I can see it coming
(Am) I see how this will (G) end;
(verse 2)
It's / fourth and long the ball is wet my (C) knee is in a brace
the (D) coaches eyes are burning red his (C) stare ignites my (G) face
my center crashes to the field, a (C) linebacker has my fate sealed
the (D) cornerback breaks the line my (C) failure is re- (G) vealed
(verse 3)
Well the / judge is drunk the jurys hung the (C) plantiffs plain to see
the (D) prosecutor points his bony (C) finger strait at (G) me
my defense just doesn't care the (C) guilt is heavy in the air
the (D) verdict may just take a seat in (C) the electric (G) chair

Diminished
01:55
|
|||
(F#m7b5) Never have I been here before
I’m standing outside of heavens door
(C) One last look upon the earth
as I look back from death to birth
and this (F#m7b5) fleeting moment just won’t pass
which brings us to this impasse
my (C) heart won’t budge I can’t move on
can’t lift the gloom I’m not that strong
and (G) I remember looking in your eyes
there’s (Bm7) hope, but it all ends in demise
and (D7) you take me by the hand
a (G) sentimental gesture to remind me where i stand
(F#m7b5) I’ve been di - (Em) minished
(Bm7) My life ends un- (C) finished
Like a (D7) storm, and the rain pretends to care
It will (C) wash away the dreams leaving nothing but despair
So I (Bm7) grasp at the pieces, whatever I can claim
But (F#m7b5) I’m diminished now I will never be the same

Cincinnati Crying
02:09
|
|||
(E7) Well I’m / back I town I’ve been gone too long
the / streets call my name but I don’t belong
what (A7) once was home is not the same
a- (E7) nother man lived here and his ghost remains
(B7) I’m in Cincinnati
(A7) memories are flying at me
(E7) open the shades and the skyline looms
a / hell of a view from this hotel room
my (A7) life’s just a blur through these tear-filled eyes
to (E7) relive the past but the past denies
(B7) I’m in Cincinnati
(A7) memories are flying at me
I’m (E7) sitting here (F#m) wondering
(A7) what am I to (E7) do
(C#m7) Cincinnati’s (A7) crying and
(B7) I’m crying (E7) too
I (E7) drive down the street to my favorite bar
the fa / miliar scent of a rental car
is the (A7) only thing I recognize
get (E7) back in the car as another memory dies
(B7) I’m in Cincinnati
(A7) memories are flying at me
no- (E7) stalgia’s overrated so I hit the road
my / river of anxiety’s in overload
I (A7) hit the gas and i’m airport bound
(E7) I can’t wait to forget this town
(B7) I’m in Cincinnati
(A7) memories are flying at me

early in the morning as i open my eyes
a glorious moment before i realize
it was (Em+) all just dreams and the sandman’s gone
so i (G+)start my day with a repressed yawn
i (D) got the coffee brewin and as (C/G) far as i can tell
it’s gonna (G+) take a lot of coffee to get me through hell
(Bm7) hell is what you make of it
and (D) Hell just for the hell of it
to (G) Hell with it all i’m (Am) gunna make a scene
woke (C/G) up in hell want (D) back in my dream
gunna (Em) shed my wings em (C/G) brace my horns
(D) scorn my love and (G+) love to scorn
(G+) the coffee’s in my belly and the combs through my hair
i’m pillaging my dresser for something to wear
(Em+) yesterdays shirt will have to do
i’ve (G+) got to do my laundry before this week is through
gotta drag myself from this hole i dwell
it’s only monday morning and this weeks been hell
the devil in the details and the details in my mind
i can’t shake this feeling that i’ve been left behind
i won’t change though I’ll have hell to pay
this is my inferno and i’ll keep it this way
if ya cant beat ‘em join ‘em embrace the flame
i advise you do the same

Time In The Mirror
02:37
|
|||
there’s (Em) time in the (C/G) mirror
for the (Em) first time (G) years
there’s (B7) time to seek your (Am) answers
there’s (C/G) time to shed your (Em) tears
this (Em) wasn’t on my (C/G) schedule
(Em) i had things to (D) do
i would (Am) fight this incon- (B7) venience,
oh (C/G) i would see it (Em) through
(subtle key change)
but (E♭Dim) then i saw you through my door
your (A/E) eyes pierced deep into my core
as (B7) if you knew my soul begged for
you (G#m) to take me then (F#m) on the floor
(sudden key change)
but (Em) time is in (C/G) human
(Em) time can let you (G) see
(B7) time would flow cor- (Am) ruption
through the (C/G) purest part of (Em) me
i (Em) didn’t take an (C/G) inventory
(Em) details in my (D) way
al- (Am) though i planned to (B7) reconcile
my (C/G) plans just slipped a- (Em) way
and i (E♭Dim) don’t believe in burning hell
but (A/E) as i age i can tell
a (B7) driving force to compel
as (G#m) if i had a (F#m) soul to sell
and (Em) time keeps on (C/G) rolling
and the (Em) mirror never (G) lies
we’re (B7) marching to the (Am) end of time
but (C/G) time never (Em) dies

Both Of My Girlfriends
03:33
|
|||
(A7) Both of my girlfriends love that (D7) classical and jazz
But I (A7) prefer country western to that (E7) fancy razzmatazz
So I’m (Bm7/F#) singing Charlie Daniels, Garth (F#m) Brooks and Patsy Cline
And (D7) everybody with a twang (A7) is a friend of mine
(refrain)
And I (A) know that this can't go on
My (E) heart has wandered far too long
I (D) can't keep up romantic crimes
(A) Both my girlfriends blow my mind
(A) - (D) - (E) - (F#m) - (D) - (E) - (A6) - (A/E)
(verse 2)
Both of my girlfriends love ro- (D7) mantic comedies
But I (A7) love me action thrillers with (E7) violent tendicies
So I’m (Bm7/F#) looking for a compromise where the (F#m) hero sells guitars
But she’s (D7) got a gun to keep it fun she’s (A7) shooting for the stars
(verse 3)
Both of my girlfriends believe (D7) two hearts can be bound
I’m (A7) not what you call a ladies man but I (E7) tend to get around
I’ve got (Bm7/F#) issues with commitment I’ve got (F#m) issues of all kinds
I de- (D7) cided I was fickle but (A7) then I changed my mind

My Bleeding God
02:20
|
|||
I woke up to the ringing of the phone
Should have kept on sleeping but my dreams were overthrown
I placed the receiver to my ear
Welcome to hell there’s no way out of here
It seems I’m a lost endeavour
Screams haunt my dreams forever
I close my eyes with the compass in my hand
A quest to find my way back to slumber land
It occurs to me as I lie awake
That I just can’t wait for the madness to break
I’ve gotta take my fate into my own hands
Gotta overcome the failure of the best laid plans
There’s not enough bullets in the world to make this right
My finger’s on the trigger and the demon’s in my sights
All I have to do is squeeze
But I guess I’m not the man to bring you to your knees
I put the gun down this is not my game
A moral victory but defeat just the same
My bleeding god is two thousand years old
A long time ago but but still the story’s told
And the wound just keeps getting deeper every year
A slave to a god who thrives on fear
I no longer can believe I’m blessed
It’s time to lay this god to rest

I only Cry in Major Key
03:14
|
|||
(D) If I were to write a song
the (Em) probability
there’d (G) be a hint of melancholy
(D) in the melody
so (D) brace yourself cause my pen bleeds
these (Em) words up this page
I (G) fight the desolation
but (D) fail to disengage
(refrain)
(Bm7) Sometimes I’m (F#m) lost for words
as (D7) if I had (G) never heard
the (D) Angels singing (Em) out to me
I (G) only cry in (D) major key
(D) If I found myself with you
with this (Em) guitar in my hand
I (G) wonder what I’d sing to you
(D) as I made my stand
a (D) gentle strum upon these strings
would (Em) captivate the room
but no (G) words emerge from my lips
to (D) break the pending gloom
And (D) so I put my mask back on
the (Em) music starts to fade
the (G) day breaks I return to work
the (D) piper must be paid
the (D) world will turn the sun will shine
and the (Em) shadow plays her part
to (G) drown the tune in my head
and (D) silence my heart

Decaffeinated
03:10
|

(Dm7) drag and the (Am) world drags with you
(Dm7) drag and the (C/G) gloom can feed
say (G) hey doc, i (Em) need a little something
you’ve (F) always got something for the (G) edge i need
cause (C7) i can’t go de- (G7) caffeinated
(C7) i can’t start the (F) day
with- (Dm) out the kick to (Am) break the spell
and (C/G) get me on my (F) way
i (Dm7) couldn’t see a (Am) future
(Dm7) too much life to (C/G) live
i (G) mastered the (Em) art of take
and (F) never had to (G) give
i (Dm7) thought i had a (Am) calling
but that (Dm7) call just never (C/G) came
it (G) never knew my (Em) number
it (F) never knew my (G) name
and - (refrain)
(Dm7) drag this (Am) day won’t end
(Dm7) drag i’ll (C/G) just pretend
that (G) i will start to- (Em) morrow clean
but (F) know that i will (G) never mend

A Little Bit Of Bacon
01:59
|
|||
(verse 1) (G) a / hard risin’ morning and the coffee is cold
the re- (C/G) fridgerators empty or so I’ve been told
by the (Am) frigerator gnome who (C/G) lives on my shelf
though (G) sometimes I think I’m just talking to myself
(refrain)
(C/G) All I need’s a (D) little bit
to (Bm7) get me through, (Am) today’s shit
a (Em) little bit of bacon, (C/G) goes a long way
a (D) lotta bit of bacon would (C/G) make my (G) day
(verse 2) I’m / drivin’ down the highway lookin’ for a bite
(C/G) not a truck stop nor a diner in sight
to (Am) draw me in for (C/G) some breakfast fare
the (G) familiar sizzle and aroma in the air
(repeat refrain)
(verse 3) A / visit to my mamma and I’m happy to see
she’s (C/G) got the stove a burnin’ with a fryng pan for me
my (Am) drive was long but she (C/G) stayed up late
(G) good things come to those who wait
(repeat refrain)

Somewhere
03:43
|
|||
somewhere out there
the / answers that you seek
somewhere within your grasp
closer than you think
(Em) somewhere in the (Am) darkness a
(C/G) light will start to (G) shine
and (D) if you em - (Am) brace that light
your (C/G) soul can bond with (G) mine
somewhere and it’s lost in a dream
but / lost’s a strong word or so it would seem
so / somewhere safe in my heart
the key to this life that makes me a part
of (Em) everything and by (Am) everything
i (C/G) really mean (G) everything
so (D) take a deep breath, search (Am) deep inside
(C/G) find that safe place for your (G) soul to confide
(C/G) a fool falls for a god with a name
but a (Am) godless soul can fall the same
so i will fall for love instead
cause word on the street is god is dead
you can say i’m an nihilist,
a label with a sting
i’ve been called a heathen
for what my love could bring
somewhere, there’s home for soul
a sunny beachside where the waves will roll
i stand on the shore watch the ships lost at sea
i’ll send out a beacon to guide them to me
i’m not a savior and there’s no such thing
i’m just a man with the courage to sing
a little off key and a little out of time
to the beat off a universe in her prime

(Am) 212 degrees
(C/G) yet my heart stays in deep freeze
I’m (G) somehow trapped in both extremes
the (Am) frozen kettle somehow steam’s
me (F) to a point of no return
E- (Dm) teral ice will start to burn
no (Em) soul shall stir in this joint
in (Am) fear I’ll reach my boiling point
refrain
(C/G) boiling
(C7/E) boiling
(Bm7b5) through my veins it’s
(F) boiling
(C/G) everybody
(G) near me is just
(Em) flinching and
re -(G7) coiling
and there’s (C/G) no way to (F) know
when my (G) cool just might (C/G) blow
G-G7-C/G-C7/E
a (Am) drop of sweat forms on my brow
(C/G) only hell can stop me now
e- (G) merging from the glacier thaw
a (Am) glowing ember reveals the flaw
I (F) always knew was deep inside
the (Dm) dormant rage no longer hides
and (Em) out pours the lava flow
con- (Am) suming everything i know

oh my
it’s time to say good bye
listen to this melody i
think you will hear why
oh i
listen as you cry
and i absorb the undertones
leaking from your eye
(refrain)
the tears are flowing
and so am i
The only music we ever made
was when we said good bye
so perhaps i can shed some light
to what brings us here today
and i know i implicate myself
with ever word i say
you would sing a loving tune
i would play guitar
but we never could find harmony
perhaps it’s who we are

No Safe Place

(Am) I had a (C/G) dream I was (Am) living in a (C/G) dream
I was (Am) neither live nor (D7) dead I was (Em) something in be- (Am) tween
it was /hideous, glorious (Em) sullen and wild
one (F#m7♭5/A) million years forgotten but ni-(C/G) ieve as a (Am) child
(refrain)
(Am) There’s no (C/G) safe place for your (G) dreams to spend the (Am) night
there’s (Em) always lurking (Bm7) shadows to (Am7) steal your dreams from (Em) sight
the (C/G) best you can (D) hope for is a (G) moment ‘neath the (Em) stars
when the (C/G) dreams you have op-(G) pen their eyes lov- (Am) ing for who you (G) are
(Am) I had a (C/G) thought I was (Am) nothing but a (C/G) thought,
in a- (Am) nother thought su- (D7) spended were the (Em) answers that I (Am) sought
But the / guy who does the thinking (Em) thought of something else
he (F#m7♭5/A) thought he knew what’s best for me, that (C/G) thought he kept him- (Am) self
(Am) There was a (C/G) time I had (Am) nothing but (C/G) time
I (Am) took my time for (D7) granted and the (Em) beauty of my (Am) crime
I / didn't need a jury (Em) to condemn my sin
my (F#m7♭5/A) punishment was a life gone by and (C/G) frozen heart with- (Am) in

Eleven Hours

11 hours ago you called me on the phone
you said you had a message for me from the danger zone
the judge had made his choice and the tension in your voice,
no more words were needed there was nothing to rejoice
oh i am not at liberty to cry
so i keep my tears in this whiskey bottle but my eyes are dry
and the season just won’t change, this winter has been strange
with this disease, spring will tease and leave me all deranged
it’s deja vous all over again
i remember this was happening
but don’t remember when
11 hours ago i poured myself a drink
one more glass of sorrow to drown me to the brink
now the bottle’s nearly empty yet my thirst is unfulfilled
11 hours of damage that my heart just can’t rebuild
oh i may never come home again
the door is locked, the keys been changed and i just can’t come in
now i can ring the doorbell but there’ll be no reply
11 hours to haunt me until the day I die
